The history of the Alpen Adria Hotel

In 1924, today's Alpen Adria Hotel was known as the "Seewirt". The Theuermann family acquired the Postkutschen-Gasthaus, the house opposite and the bathing establishments together with the Krieber family. These businesses were to be run jointly. As this was a difficult undertaking, they agreed to separate. The Theuermann family received the Seewirt and 4000m2 of land , while the Krieber family received the house opposite and the bathing facilities.

Daughter Maria Theuermann (later Hinker) soon took over the business, repeatedly rebuilt and ran the inn and later the Hotel-Pension Seewirt on her own (as her husband was a district judge in Hermagor).

Her daughter, our senior manager Susanne Rainer, took over the hotel in 1978 and ten years later gave up her job as a teacher in 1985, as the hotel had also opened for the winter season in the meantime and the double burden was no longer possible.

In 1971 and 1977, her two sons Marcus and Klaus were born, for whom there was unfortunately little time due to work and school. With the active support of her husband Edi (as she always calls him), the Seewirt grew and was constantly expanded. In 1989, 27 million schillings were invested. This renovation, which included the construction of the first wellness area and 20 rooms, as well as the expansion of the dining room, kitchen and cold stores, saw the hotel move up into the four-star league.

During a hike with guests  up the Gartnerkofel, the view was so good that you could see the Adriatic Sea flashing out and the Grossglockner at the same time. This is how our senior manager came up with the new hotel name - Alpen Adria Hotel.

Further renovations and extensions  were then possible in 2003 (indoor pool) and 2009 (restaurant and new room wing) thanks to land purchases. The generation change with son Klaus took place in 2003 and in 2004 he was joined in the family business by his lovely wife Andrea.

We have already told you that our hotel celebrated its 100th anniversary this year. Of course, we can't miss the opportunity to introduce our senior managers:

Our dear boss Susanne Rainer has been running the hotel since 1978 with great dedication, hospitality and attention to detail. In the meantime, however, she and her husband enjoy more time at home or in their own alpine hut.
But she can't do without the hotel altogether - rarely a day goes by when she doesn't look after things, and that's a good thing :) One of Susanne's specialties is homemade apricot jam. Hundreds of kilos of apricots are diligently preserved every year. But "Grandma Su" always makes time for her grandchildren too and they cook together  or just sit and play together.

Our senior manager Edi Rainer still has the bookkeeping in the hotel fully under control - and that at over 82! Together with his family, Edi has turned the Seewirt into the Alpen Adria Hotel it is today with many renovations and years of vision.
But his favorite place to be now is his Edi-Alm, where he enjoys the peace and quiet and the view of the valley. And if the alpine pasture isn't enough, he heads to Italy for delicious spaghetti aglio olio e peperoncino and a glass of vino rosso :)

With Romy, Julie and Theo - the offspring of Klaus and Andrea - the 5th generation is already in the starting blocks. We are excited to see where the journey will take us - and who knows where we will be in 2124 ;)
